DC Statehood?

Allright. It's not nice that some citizens can't vote in a democracy. Taxation without representation and all that.

But where do 750,000 people get the notion that they qualify as a state? They're not a state. They're a city. They can vote. Their vote just doesn't count for much. (Same as everybody else's vote) They do qualify as a small town. About the size of Baltimore?

So why not annex DC back to Maryland and that part of Virginia. Those states ceded the land to the federal government in the first place. The part of DC south of the Potomac in uninhabited, except by the Federal Government. The rest of it is on the Maryland side of the river.

Maryland probably doesn't want to acquire DC. State funds would have to be budgeted to the District. On the other hand, part of DC's taxes (sales tax) would go to Maryland. DC wouldn't qualify as a county on its own and Montgomery County probably wouldn't want any part of DC except west of Rock Creek Park. PG County would come up with the short tax base and lots more welfare recipients.

Has anybody checked into the possibility of DC Cityhood?
